Latest from the Doc

November 20, 2006 / by anniel

I just got off the phone with my doctor and she gave me the result of my lastest blood work.  She congratulated me for improving my numbers including my cholestral and tryglcerides, etc.  But.... the numbers still aren't good enough and my number for insulin resistance was not good at all.  She is recommending a 6 week program with a dietician and physician to bring those numbers more into line.

The biggest problem is that I will have to drive to Medford, Oregon which is about 2 1/2 hours from here and includes several mountain passes.  Aaaaugh.  Not good when it is winter.  Of course, I can choose to see a doctor in Klamath Falls to get treatment, but I have not been impressed with the care I have received here, locally.  In fact, my primary care physician also got the same report from the lab and when I talked to his office a couple of weeks ago, they told me my numbers were just fine.  Well.... I heard the numbers today and although they are better.... they are still not fine !!!!!

So, I will be discussing this situation with JR and making sure he can be home to drive me over to Medford for these appointments.

The really bad news is that I have to give up cream and honey in my coffee.  Ohhh Noooo !!!!  That is like giving up life, itself.  Not sure I will survive it.  I used to drink black coffee, but sure don't like it anymore.  Guess, I will just give up coffee and join Cindy in drinking tea.  Soooo..... if I am out-of-sorts... just know I am following doctor's orders and I am not drinking the coffee.  (They may need a straight jacket for me the first couple of weeks without my coffee. lol )

So that is the latest from the doc.

Annie :o)

Did you ask her if she wanted a bop on the nose for telling you to give up cream and honey? [TONGUE] Well get out your rose colored glasses and maybe you can find some good somewhere... Like those numbers going down! Maybe getting your blood sugar sorted out will help you emotional health too. [HEART][HEART]

She said it would help me feel perkier. Hey... I could handle a little bit of perky. hehehe. She said it has helped people with the autoimunne problem, too. So maybe, I will get some of the aches and pains. I'll be joining you for tea from now on... the herbal kind. I'm already starting the grieving process over my cream and honey. Tears......[SAD][SAD]

meant "get rid of" some of the aches and pains.[BLUSH]

Maybe do one at a time... over a period of a few weeks... that way, it won't be such cold turkey![WINK][HEART]

Hey.... don't ya think the picture of the doc above looks like she could use this diet? Maybe she needs to take her own advice and leave me out of this whole diet thing.[WINK][LOL][LOL]

Load a truck full of oatmeal. Eat it twice a day. Skip honey, sugar and anything but low fat milk in the cooked oatmeal. Don't eat anything white (no bread, potatoes, anything made with wheat flour, dairy products, etc.). Drink two glasses of red wine with dinner. If you nosh between meals, eat celery and carrot sticks. You will bash the crap out of your cholesterol. In three weeks you will also have kicked the sugar habit.

I thought you were going to hire on as my ranch hand? Well... I'll pay ya extra and you can be the ranch dietician, too. Hey... I like the wine part.[THUMBUP][THUMBUP]

...and what about me? I'll be JD's assistant! Joining in the 2 glasses of wine, that is![TONGUE][HEART]

can you use sugar substitute? skim milk? i could not give up coffee! [OHMY]
  • anniel said 1 years ago
Ya know.... I've tried that substitute stuff..... yuk !!!!!! Gotta have the real thing or nothin' at all. When I lived in California, Saturday mornings would often find me at a little trendy sidewalk bakery having cafe mocha and a scone. Guess, I will just have my coffee with cream & honey as a once-a-week treat and the rest of the week it will be herbal teas.[SMILE][HEART]

Well.... I put up this post after talking to the doctor and then ate a very healthy meal, topped off with a piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Couldn't let Hubby have all of that pie to himself.[WINK][LOL][LOL]

    Anniel,

As a diebetic of 20 years, I can only advise you to cut back on your sugar and honey immediately, believe me you do not want the insulin resistance to turn into full blown diabetes.... The consequences are just not worth it. Tell me, do you prefer pink, blue or yellow?

    Good Luck,
    Denny Kessler

Thanks for the encouragements. Colors???? I guess yellow.[SMILE][HEART][HEART]

u should cut down sugary food and carbohidrt too as this can be convert into sugar in your system... one thing..u should take lots of fiber, both diluted and undiluted. take fibre supplement if u could take the recommended amount for diabetics...fibre is a component that regulate normal blood glucose levels...really help with my patients to maintain normal sugar level...

best of luck in ur diet....

I HATE not being able to eat the things I want to!!!! I got my numbers down by increasing exercise. Is that an option?
  • anniel said 1 years ago
I wish it were an option. I have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and I have a lot of pain. I can hardly walk and here I am pitchforking hay to cows. So.... when I get through with the chores, I find that I often spend much of the rest of the day in bed. This is a really rotten life. My feet experience constant pain as does the rest of my body from my neck down. I'm just a mess. I'm trying to stay out of the pits of depression, but not having a lot of luck at that either.

I can do diet. I may fuss alot, but I have done special diets before and I have had good results. So, here I go again.... cutting back on my favorite big beef steaks and those really greasy lambchops. I do like fish and that is a real plus for giving me good numbers. And, the coffee.... well, I will survive the withdrawels and will over the next couple of weeks cut back until it isn't part of my life. I will be a herbal tea drinker. I also like most vegetables and that is also a plus.

Now.... all of you just keep cheering me on and reminding me to be a good girl and eat right. Thanks....Annie :o)[SMILE][HEART][HEART]

You have my sincere sympathy, from one coffee addict to another.

Caffeine is a nutrient. Without sufficient caffeine, you get a deficiency disease called "sleep."[SMILE]

I'm not up on the Mixed connective Tissure disease but am wondering if it is anything like fibromyalgia. I have the fibro and deal with chronic pain but it is not life trreatening, just painful and depressing. The chronic fatigue and not sleeping well are kinda hard to handle. Many blessings on your diet and getting your numbers down. My sister was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes so I need to watch what I eat also.[THUMBUP]
  • anniel said 1 years ago
It is very much like Fibro and it usually isn't life threatening, but it can cause the tissues around the vital organ to become inflammed to such a degree, it can cause damage to those organs, especially the heart and lungs. The doctors fight over my diagnosis... some say Fibro and some say MCTD. I'm tired of their fighting.... I just know I hurt badly. My heart goes out to you with the Fibro. What do you do to help with the symptoms? Keep in touch, okay? Annie :o)[HEART][HEART]

[SAD]I'm sorry you have to give up something you love Annie! I know how hard that is. But hopefully you will feel so much better in the long run. And maybe tea will be the new 'coffee'![ROLLEYES][HEART]
  • anniel said 1 years ago
Well.... coffee is a no-no for almost everything I suffer from including high blood pressure, MCTD, fiberous cysts, depression, anxiety, etc. I just love the taste of it, but probably more so because of the cream and honey. So, it is all going by the wayside. I am starting by cutting to 1/2 cup of coffee per day with only a couple of drops of creamer. I figure in two weeks, I will be off the stuff completely. I couldn't stand just going cold turkey and having caffeine withdrawels. I've done this before and was off coffee for a long time, but I let it creep back in. Yep... I will be a herbal tea girl now.[THUMBUP][HEART][HEART]

These are the colors for the three artificial sweetners, pink blue and yellow. I prefer the yellow, better flavor.
