Liberal or Conservative???

August 21, 2006 / by anniel

My favorite history prof once gave a quiz at the beginning of the school year. He first ask us to write at the top of our paper if we were Republican, Democrat, Socialist, etc.... Then we took a quiz and from that we found that many of us fell into the socialist category. The questions were based on the manifestos for each political party. One man got really angry, shouted at the prof. and stormed out of the class. Never did see that guy again. Personally, I thought it was interesting that what we think we really are is not who we really are. Labels and our personal views don't always match.

In the below quiz.... I found that I have not changed since the last time I took one of these quizzes.... years ago. I knew I was a middle of the roader, although can't accuse me of being soft on crime.

Now Hubby.... he claims to be a conservative redneck and I am sure if he took this quiz.... he would score so far to the right that he would be off the scale. lol

Have fun taking the quiz. You might be surprised where you fall on the line of liberal to conservative.

Annie :o)

Forced choices make the quiz seriously biased.
  • anniel said 2 years ago
Does your reply indicate that you turned out to be a ultra conservative instead of that liberal person you see when you look in your mirror?[WINK][ROLLEYES]
  • anniel said 2 years ago
You know Percivel.... Your comment for some odd reason made me think of a past event I attended and the reporting of it by the newspaper. I attended a speaking engagement by the former Soviet leader Mikael Gobechav which was held at Modesto Junior College. He referred to Ronald Reagan with great affection during different parts of the speech. He gave RR credit for the end of the cold war and the fall of the Berlin wall, etc. Did the Modesto Bee say one word about those references? Nope... not one word. Typical of the Bee and also of the professional educators of California. I know... because I was one of them. I was educated in their institutions of higher learning and worked with teachers also educated in those same institutions. Very very liberal in their thinking. I think it was indoctrination on the same level as the current indocrination by Muslim radicals teaching their children to hate.

    I was 70% conservative...
  • anniel said 2 years ago
As a moderate... I should run for office. If there were more moderates in Washington... more problems would get solved as we would be willing to work across party lines. Or.... nothing would get done because none of us moderates could make up our minds on how we truly stand on issues. lol[LOL]

Can't survive in the Outback of Oregon without a gun... or at least, I sure wouldn't want to try.[SMILE]

I do not see some of these issues as either conservative or liberal. One can be in favor of civil liberties and be a conservative while one can war as a legitimate action for humanity's sake and still be a liberal.

In regard to the Modesto Bee, do you have the same reactions to the reporting done by Fox News. They too only report what they want you to hear. News bias is nothing new.

Gorbachev's affection for Reagan might be a negative drag for conservatives rather than a positive one. After all, he was a dreaded Communist wasn't he?
  • anniel said 1 years ago
Not sure about that negative drag. Actually, Gobechav was touring the country talking about the greenhouse affect, water shortage, and the need for a continued open discussion between world powers concerning these issues. I think he truly had developed a friendship and a respect for Ronald Reagan which is greatly lacking amongst Californians. Sadly, they have rejected one of their own.

OK... I took the quiz. It says that you and I are identical on Ethics, as well as Defense and Crime... overall it also says that I am just slightly more conservative but very close. Due to these similarities I have drawn the following arbitrary "haven't had my second cup of coffee yet" conclusion: You must be "practically perfect in every way". [SMILE]

I'm sure I'd be right there with your hubby falling off the right edge of the poll. But I must have done something wrong as a father. I have 3 adult children, only 1 is way right, 1 way left and 1 right down the middle.[SMILE]

I am going to take the quiz. I would definitely consider myself a socialist. Most people think that is a bad thing since our primary exposure to that ideal is the failed and struggling examples we have had in China, Russia, Cuba, etc. They are infact dictatorships (or technically rule by a small "elite" the communist party in the form of the Politburo).

According to political theory, cultures evolve through various levels of socio-economic formats. An agrarian-based, dictatorship is the beginning, slowly moving through republican democracy and moving on toward socialism and communism. The reason the above stated have failed is they did not evolve. They started with a poor, illiterate, primarily agrarian-based society and tried to force their societies into socialism. Selfishness and high-mindedness takes over for the "elite" and they start to abuse their people.

Socialism is able to function properly when a democratic society has reached a level of economic and social security in a way to allow for a redistribution of wealth so those that are less fortunate are not left in the gutters. The society cares for the ill and poor in a way that does not place a drain on the society as a whole, but still allows for all people to have the things they need.

Okay AJ.... as I see it..............[WINK].... you best not run for political office with those views. First of all, you won't be get any "big dollar support" from the mega corporations... they don't like that kind of thinking. Secondly... we poor agrarian based farmers and ranchers can't afford to contribute to your campaign. Best that you keep your library job. You might have had a chance at office back during the FDR era.

Even if I couldn't contribute, I would vote for you.[WINK][SMILE][HEART]
  • lunarhunk said 1 years ago
Thanks for the support! I am sure that Big Business would definitely not be too happy with me! I don't know that I would ever run for an office higher than town council or school committee. I am much more interested in working on local issues. I think the big issues are important, but I like working at the library too much. Would have to give that up to be a professional politician. Archie Bunker definitely would not have liked me ... [LOL]

It was those social programs to help the needy and homeless that probably put you in to the liberal part on the fiscal side. Just remember this.... paying for all those programs is your job as the tax payer.[WINK][SMILE]
